EASTLAKE, OH -- After falling in 10 innings on Friday night, Beloit defeated Lake County 7-5 in 10 innings on Sunday afternoon in the series finale at Classic Park. The Sky Carp victory snaps a three-game skid at the hands of the Captains.
Beloit jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, scoring on a Joe Mack RBI ground out in the first and on an Osiris Johnson 2-RBI double in the second.
Lake County responded by scoring four straight runs – one in the second, two in the third and one in the fifth – against Sky Carp starter Zach King to take a 4-3 lead into the sixth.
The lead was short-lived, as Zach Zubia cranked a solo homer to left center in the top of the sixth to knot the game at four.
Thanks to scoreless frames from Matt Givin and Franklin Sanchez out of the bullpen, the game remained deadlocked until the top of the eighth.
After Torin Montgomery led off the inning with a walk, Zach Zubia moved him to third with a single. Then, Jake Thompson scored Montgomery on a sac fly to put Beloit back in the drivers’ seat 5-4.
Caleb Wurster delivered a 1-2-3 eighth inning for Beloit and returned for the bottom of the ninth to close the door but ran into trouble.
Wurster issued a leadoff walk to Jake Fox, then allowed a one-out double to Chase DeLauter which put the tying run on third and winning run on second. Dayan Frias grounded out on a slow roller to short that scored Fox to tie the game. However, Beloit’s lefty buckled down with two outs, inducing an inning-ending foul pop up to send the game to the 10th.
In the 10th, the Sky Carp jumped right back in front, using a go-ahead double from Montgomery to reclaim the lead. Zubia followed with a double of his own to push the lead to 7-5.
Wurster returned for the bottom of the 10th and finished out the win, leaving runners on the corners to end the game.
The Sky Carp start a six-game series with the Dayton Dragons, High-A affiliate of the Cincinnati Reds, on Tuesday evening at 7:05pm eastern time. Following the series in Dayton, Beloit returns to ABC Supply Stadium on August 8th to kick off a six-game set with Peoria.
