(UPTOWN CHARLOTTE, NC) – Designated hitter Nate Mondou launched his sixth home run of the season and RHP Sean Burke was sharp over five innings to lead the Charlotte Knights past the Nashville Sounds by a score of 4-2 on Tuesday night in the opening game of a six-game series from Truist Field in Uptown Charlotte. The win was Charlotte’s seventh over the past nine games.
Burke (1-3, 6.75) started Tuesday’s game and allowed just one run on two hits over five strong innings. He also fanned a career-best eight batters on the night en route to his first career Triple-A victory.
The Charlotte bullpen was solid in relief of Burke. RHP Nick Padilla earned his third save of the season after pitching a scoreless ninth inning. He allowed two baserunners in the ninth, but battled back to get the final out.
Offensively, the Knights jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning thanks to an RBI single by right fielder Oscar Colás. The Knights made it a two-run lead in the second inning thanks to the solo home run from Mondou. He walked three times and reached base a total of four times on the night.
The Sounds added a run in the top of the fourth inning to cut the Charlotte lead in half, but the Knights battled right back. Shortstop Erik González singled home Víctor Reyes in the bottom of the fourth inning to give the Knights a 3-1 lead. González had three hits on the night and two RBI. He added an RBI double in the bottom of the sixth inning.
The Knights will continue the six-game series against the Nashville Sounds (Triple-A affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers) from Truist Field on Wednesday morning.
