In game six of the series between the Myrtle Beach Pelicans and the Down East Wood Ducks, both starters, Brayan Mendoza for the Woodies and Santy for the Pelicans, gave up a single in the first inning. In the top of the second the Pelicans took the lead, scoring one run after three singles in a row by Chavers, Kalmer, and Morel loaded the bases with Chavers scoring from third on a double play.
The game went scoreless until the final inning of the game as both starters and bullpens limited damage being done by the respective offenses. From the third through the eighth, the Pelicans offense had a hit in the third and fifth inning with both players reaching scoring position. The Woodies offense accumulated 5 hits from the third through the eighth, leaving runners in scoring position four times as they tried to tie the ball game. The Pelicans scored once more in the ninth to extend the lead to 2-0 with Chavers singling to open the inning and coming around to score from third after a sacrifice fly by Ramirez. Calarco singled to open the bottom half of the ninth, Blackmon flew out to center and then a double play was turned to end the game in a 2-0 Pelicans win. The Pelicans staff of Santy, Pichardo, and Cabrera combined for 8 hits, 2 walks, and 7 strikeouts with Pichardo being credited with the win and Cabrera with the save.
The Wood Ducks (55-42) and Myrtle Beach Pelicans (57-44) end the series with the Woodies leading the series 4-2. The Woodies head on the road for a two-week road trip to Kannapolis and Charleston. They will return home to face Fayetteville on August 22nd as the first pitch is set for 7pm in Kinston, NC at Grainger Stadium. All fans can come out for Tribute Tuesday presented by Starbucks.
