In game five of the series between the Salem Red Sox and the Down East Wood Ducks, the Woodies starter, Brock Porter faced only three batters in his first inning of work. The Red Sox starter, Paez faced four batters with Villarroel recording the first hit on the night in the bottom of the first. Salem scored their first run on the night in the second as Garcia scored from third on a fielder’s choice RBI groundout, Salem up 1-0. The Woodies did not respond in the bottom of the second with Paez going three up three down versus Woodies batters. The third and fourth innings went scoreless for both sides, as the Red Sox reaching scoring position once in the third, and the Woodies reached scoring position twice.

The scoreless streak was broken in the bottom of the fifth as the Woodies tied the game up in Paez’s last inning of work as Bannister reached on a hit by pitch, swiped second and third to score on an RBI single by Pena, tying the game at 1-1. The sixth and seventh were very quiet innings as both sides pitching cruised. The Woodies reliever, Drake, went three up three down in both innings, racking up 4 strikeouts and the Red Sox reliever, Scroggins, gave up one hit with three strikeouts in 2.0 innings.

In the eighth, the Red Sox offense came to life with five hits and the Woodies defense made two errors for a four-run inning against Drake. One run scored on an error, one on a wild pitch and two on RBI’s credited to Hernandez on his double and Mejicano on his single. The Woodies could not answer for the rest of the night as Johnson closed the game out for the Red Sox as he threw the eighth and ninth, not giving up a hit and striking out three for a Red Sox 5-1 victory.

The Wood Ducks (48-36) and Salem Red Sox (41-44) play game six tomorrow, July 23nd, with the Red Sox leading the series 3-2, as the first pitch is set for 1pm in Kinston, NC at Grainger Stadium. All fans can come out for Dogs and Dogs day for $1 hot dogs and bring your furry friend presented by Minuteman Food Mart and Riverbank Animal Hospital.
