FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- In front of a sellout crowd of 7,235 fans, the TinCaps beat the South Bend Cubs, 8-2, on Sunday afternoon at Parkview Field. With the victory, Fort Wayne earned a split of the six-game series and finished its two-week homestand with a 7-5 record.

Starting pitcher Victor Lizarraga (No. 7 Padres prospect) tossed five innings of one-run ball with two strikeouts. At 19, Lizarraga is the youngest player in the Midwest League.

Meanwhile, the 'Caps offense burst out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning, thanks to an RBI double by catcher Colton Bender and a run-scoring groundout by second baseman Kervín Pichardo.

South Bend chipped into its deficit in the fifth as third baseman Fabian Pertuz launched a home run to left-center field.

But the TinCaps grew their lead with a six-run seventh. Designated hitter Juan Zabala pounded a two-run double, center fielder Jakob Marsee hit an two-run single, third baseman Marcos Castañon drove in a run on a groundout, and first baseman Nathan Martorella delivered an RBI single.

Fort Wayne finished with 11 hits, including a game-high three from left fielder Justin Farmer. The 'Caps were 6-for-12 with runners in scoring position.

After Lizarraga, Alan Mundo recorded four outs, followed by Chris Lincoln for 1 2/3 innings. Aaron Holiday worked the ninth.

The Cubs' only other run came in their final trip to the plate on an RBI single by designated hitter Yohendrick Piñango.

Sunday was Military Appreciation Day at Parkview Field, presented by OmniSource, Steel Dynamics, and the San Diego Padres. Complimentary tickets were made available to veterans, active duty military, and their families. As part of the festivities, the TinCaps wore camo jerseys that will be auctioned off for Honor Flight Northeast Indiana. Prior to first pitch, F-16s flew over the ballpark.
