KANNAPOLIS, N.C. – Four different batters put up multi-hit performances in an, 8-4, victory for the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers (48-44) at home against the Delmarva Shorebirds (40-51) Thursday night at Atrium Health Ballpark.

Kannapolis’ second win in a row over Delmarva moves their second-half record in the Carolina League to 13-14, dropping the visiting Shorebirds to a 12-14 second-half ledger.

RHP Tanner McDougal used a healthy mix of a mid-90s fastball and an upper-70s breaking ball to keep Shorebirds batters off balance in his four innings of work. The number 20 overall prospect only saw his stat line smeared in the fourth inning with a two-run Delmarva home run. McDougal struck out four and walked two, allowing three hits in his night’s work.

LHP Logan Lyle (W, 1-0) earned his first win of 2023 with two innings of work out of the bullpen, striking out two and allowing two runs on two hits.

Ryan McCarthy notched one of his two extra-base hits on the evening in the bottom of the second to put Kannapolis on top first, smoking an RBI double to left field to score Chris Lanzilli. Brooks Baldwin, who turned in a three-hit night and was a triple shy of the cycle, added a two-run home run in the bottom of the third to push the Ballers to a 3-0 lead after three innings of baseball.

Delmarva obtained all of their runs in Thursday’s game with home runs, tallying their first of two in the top of the fourth off the bat of Noelberth Romero. The Shorebirds designated hitter’s fourth home run of the season cut the home team’s lead to 3-2 after three and a half innings of play.

Troy Claunch ignited another run of scoring for the Ballers in the bottom of the fourth inning with an RBI single, followed up in the fifth inning with a three-spot. Jhoneiker Betancourt and Lanzilli each added runs in the fifth with a sacrifice fly and a two-run home run, respectively.

Trendon Craig crushed the second of two home runs for the Shorebirds in the top of the sixth, hitting a long fly ball over the batter’s eye in center field, scoring Stiven Acevedo and inching closer at 7-4, advantage Kannapolis.

Betancourt recorded his second sacrifice fly of the night in the bottom of the seventh, scoring Baldwin to add another insurance run and make it 8-4 Ballers, a lead that the Shorebirds could not overtake.

RHP Peyton Pallette, the number 10 overall prospect in the White Sox system, gets the start for Kannapolis in Friday night’s action between the Cannon Ballers and the Delmarva Shorebirds. First pitch is slated for 7:00 p.m. in the Faith Night matchup.
