Hagerstown, MD - Jackson Tetreault struck out a career-high nine batters in the Hagerstown Suns 5-3 win over the West Virginia Power Monday night at Historic Municipal Stadium. The Suns have a 3-8 record in the second half and are 30-49 overall with the series finale against the Power set for Tuesday night with a 7:05 PM first pitch.
The Power took the lead in the opening inning against Suns starter Tetreault. Oneil Cruz reached on an error and came around to score on a triple to right-center field by Rodolfo Castro to make it 1-0. Castro was thrown out at home on a ground-ball to Cole Freeman and West Virginia grounded into a double-play to end the inning.
The Suns answered with three runs of their own in the first and second innings against Power starter Gavin Wallace. With one out Freeman tripled off the right-center field wall and scored on a Luis Garcia single up the middle to tie the game 1-1. Jake Scudder singled to right to move Garcia to third and Garcia scored on a sacrifice fly to right field by Omar Meregildo to take a 2-1 lead. Hagerstown added one run in the second inning when Kameron Esthay hit his seventh home run of the season to right field to increase the Suns lead to 3-1.
The Suns tacked on a run in the fifth inning when Yasel Antuna led off with a double. Freeman reached on an infield single to move Antuna to third and scored on a sacrifice fly to right field by Garcia to increase the lead 4-1.
Hagerstown added to their lead during the seventh in Wallace's final inning of work. Armond Upshaw led off with an infield single and advanced to second on an errant throw. Antuna grounded out, moving Upshaw to third and Freeman plated Upshaw with a single to left field to extend the Suns lead 5-1.
West Virginia scored two runs against Hagerstown relievers Andrew Lee and Sam Held in the eighth inning. Fabricio Macias and Ryan Peurifoy worked back-to-back walks to put runners on first and second with no outs. With one out, Lolo Sanchez walked to load the bases and Macias scored on a sacrifice fly to center field by Cruz to make it 5-2. Castro walked to load the bases with two outs, Held entered the game, and hit Deon Stafford with the first pitch of the at-bat to plate Peurifoy and make it 5-3.
Tetreault (2-7) recorded a quality start and pitched seven innings with one unearned run on two hits, no walks, and struck out a career-high nine batters. Lee entered in the eighth and pitched two-thirds of an inning and allowed two runs, four walks, and did not a record a strikeout. Held (S, 1) pitched one-and-one-third innings and allowed one walk, one hit-by-pitch, and struck out two batters.
Notes: Tetreault spun a new career and season-high for strikeouts in a game with nine… It's the third time he's struck out eight or more in a game on the year…Tetreault earned his fourth quality start of the season to tie Tomas Alastre for the team's active leader… Garcia recorded his 30th and 31st RBIs of the season… It's his seventh multi-RBI game of the season… Esthay hammered his seventh home run of the season which is the most on the team this year… Upshaw recorded his sixth multi-hit game of the season… Freeman ties his career-high in hits in a game with three….
