SAN ANTONIO – It was a low scoring affair between the San Antonio Missions and Wichita Wind Surge on Friday night. Brandon Komar recorded his second consecutive quality start as he pitched six shutout innings during his outing. The first and only run of the game came in the top of the ninth inning. After a lead-off double, Wichita scored following a bunt single and a throwing error. Wichita secured their second straight win with a 1-0 final score.
During the game, it was announced that Fernando Tatis Jr. will be joining the Missions on Saturday as part of a rehab assignment. The two-time Silver Slugger and 2021 All-Star spent parts of two season with the Missions from 2017-2018.
Fans at Nelson Wolff Stadium were treated to a pitcher’s duel between the Missions and the Wind Surge. Brandon Komar was the starting pitcher for the Missions and had to pitch out of a jam in the top of the first inning. Komar allowed back-to-back singles to Andrew Bechtold and Edouard Julien. He left those runners stranded after inducing a fly out and a ground out.
Komar allowed one hit throughout the remainder of his outing. He tossed six shutout innings while issuing three walks, allowing three hits, and striking out five batters. Komar is the first Missions pitcher this season to record consecutive quality starts.
Simeon Woods Richardson was the starting pitcher for the Wind Surge. The 4th ranked Twins prospect matched Komar and kept the Missions off the scoreboard. In four innings of work, he allowed two hits, while walking two batters, and striking out three batters.
The Missions had a scoring opportunity in the bottom of the first inning. With one out in the inning, Tirso Ornelas hit a double to right field. Woods Richardson left Ornelas stranded after inducing a fly out and recording a strikeout.
Wichita had a chance to score in the top of the eighth inning. Facing Kevin Kopps, Ernie Yake began the inning with a base hit. After striking out the next batter, Fred Schlichtholz replaced Kopps on the mound. The southpaw allowed a base hit to Julien to place two runners on base. Bechtold hit a ground ball to Juan Fernandez at third base and he threw it home to tag Yake out trying to score. The score remained 0-0 heading into the bottom of the eighth inning.
Wichita scored the first run of the game in the top of the ninth inning. With Schlichtholz still in the game, Chris Williams hit a double to left field. Jair Camargo laid down a bunt and beat out the play at first base. Fernandez, attempting to make the play, threw it away and his throwing error allowed Williams to score the go-ahead run. The Missions trailed 1-0.
In the bottom of the ninth inning, Francis Peguero came on to pitch for the Wind Surge. After recording the first out, Peguero issued a walk to Rivas. Kelvin Melean grounded into a force out with Rivas out at second base. Bryan Sammons replaced Peguero on the mound before Jack Stronach stepped to the plate.
